The Past and Future of Systematic Biology

It is with a mixture of relief and sadness that I step down as the 16th Editor-in-Chief of Systematic Biology/Systematic Zoology. The most common question I am asked is, was it a worthwhile experience. Now that I have some perspective, I can say, definitely, yes! The high quality of the manuscripts, the Associate Editors and the Editorial Board have made my time as Editor a pleasant and educational experience. Despite my fears, I only received two letters of complaint in four years and only two manuscripts that were hand-written (the one on extending human life span by living in a more circular manner I felt was more appropriate for Nature or Science).
